Common ground

ongoing project
earthenware clay, vintage tables
European Ceramic Context, Bornholm 2018

Material is central in human lives. In an endless chain of transformations, materials are turned into food, clothes, buildings and a multitude of things. Many materials have become abstract to us, combinations of materials become new materials. Today one must be an expert to recognize quality, and a researcher to detect how and where things are made and to what cost - human, ecological and economical. In this project I want to point out a single material - clay, as a historical base for wealth and civilisation. Through clay I can say something about the complex relation between the poor and the rich, and thereby touch a part of history that formed our culture.
